The phone rang and interrupted Katy Portillo finishing up her daily task as sales and catering coordinator at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Fort Worth.
She took the information and quickly filled out the necessary paperwork for their visit.
“It was out of the realm of my responsibilities but I knew it needed to get it done,” said Katy, “The [planning] team came in on Monday and everything was fine.”
By the time the contract was finalized for the August 2014 conference, Katy had been promoted to Corporate Catering Manager and she volunteered to manage the event.
Yes, she had the training – a degree in Hospitality Management from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. She had the experience of working at the Hilton. Katy also had a connection. She is Presbyterian.
Katy is a member at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton. She attended summer camps and Youthquakes at Prairie Valley. Her grandfather is a Presbyterian minister. On Sundays, when she is in Fort Worth, she attends First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth.
“This was a special project for me. I took this on because of my faith and because of my relations,” said Katy.
